Expert Talk on High Power Terahertz Generation and its Applications
24th March 2023
Department of ECE/EEE and Applied Sciences, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram organized an ‘Expert Talk’ on “High Power Terahertz Generation and its Applications” on 24th March, 2023 for the students of EEE / ECE and CSE students. The expert speaker of the session was Dr. Mukesh Jewariya, Senior Scientist, CSIR - National Physics Laboratory- New Delhi.
Dr. J. R. Ansari (Associate Professor / Physics, DCE Gurugram) welcomed Dr. Mukesh Jewariya and gave a brief introduction about him. He said Dr. Mukesh has published more than 100 papers in SCI journals. His research area is Terahertz. Presently, he is working as Senior Scientist in NPL – Delhi.
Dr. Mukesh started the session and gave an introduction on what is Terahertz, when the research is originated, how it is being generated etc., in an interesting and interacting way. He said, the Terahertz imaging will be the futuristic approach for homeland security and screening. He explained, Maxwell’s equation which is related with electromagnetics, and the generation of terahertz using semiconductor material along with photonics. It meant the Terahertz can be produced by using a combination of two effects: one is the focusing of two laser beams of consecutive frequencies at a semiconductor; the other is the separation of photoconductive charge carriers using an ultrafast laser.
Then he briefed the applications of Terahertz in terms of imaging techniques, medical applications such as identifying tumours, bone crack, etc., Checking of baggage and persons in Airport and other important places for the purpose of security, its application against threats, how to read the covered postal letters without opening (only for security purpose, with ethics) etc. He narrated about many applications in real time and said: in future Terahertz technology would show a promising potential for various fields which includes communication, security inspection and biomedicine.
The session was very interesting and interactive. In the Q&A session students from EEE and ECE asked about harms, benefits and research areas related to terahertz. Finally the session was concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Dimple Saproo (HoD/ ECE & EEE.)
